Motion with purpose

Hand-drawn metronome

Motion is a language. Used well, it tells you where things came from and where they're going. Used badly, it's a magician waving their hands to distract you.

Our rules

Every animation at Maio follows the same quiet grammar:

  • Duration between 200 and 400 milliseconds — long enough to notice, short enough to ignore.
  • Springs, not linear curves. Stiffness 280, damping 24. Things settle the way real objects do.
  • Fade, scale, and lift. Content arrives at 98% and grows into place. Never a bounce, never a spin.

Restraint as a feature

The hardest part isn't adding motion — it's knowing when to leave it out. A modal that slams open is worse than one that simply appears. So we tuned, and re-tuned, until the interface felt less like software reacting and more like paper being set down.

If you never consciously notice the motion in our apps, we've done our job.
